Angelina sticks to her guns, Rosa goes AWOL
Graft suspect Angelina Sondakh has rehashed her earlier testimony in a
hearing at the Jakarta Corruption Court, insisting that she was not in
possession of a BlackBerry smartphone and that her alleged conversation on
BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) with bribery convict Mindo “Rosa” Rosalina Manullang
never took place.
Early in Wednesday’s proceedings against graft suspect and former Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin, presiding judge Sudharmawatiningsih asked Angelina if she would like to revisit her previous testimony before being questioned as a defense witness.
The former beauty queen said that she would stick to her previous statements. (Indirect speech)
Angelina was later grilled over the BlackBerry issue by Sudharmawatiningsih, who reminded her about a photo presented by Nazaruddin’s lawyers in the last hearing that depicts the Democratic Party lawmaker sitting in her office with two smartphones, one of which was a BlackBerry.
She insisted that she did not use a BlackBerry until late 2010, long after the alleged BBM conversations occurred.

Angelina was later granted permission to ask a question of her own.
“I want to ask if my testimony in this trial can be used as evidence in my trial,” Angelina said. (Direct speech)

“That is not the authority of the panel of judges to decide. It is the right of the KPK investigators,” Sudharmawatiningsih responded. (Direct speech)
KPK prosecutor Kadek Wiradana again interrogated Angelina about the BlackBerry conversation that took place between late 2010 and early 2011.
Kadek said that KPK prosecutors were in possession of
transcripts of the conversation.

Angelina has been giving evidence in the trial of Nazaruddin, who is accused of accepting bribes over the construction of the SEA Games athletes’ village.
Judges had planned to check her testimony against that of Rosa, but the bribery convict failed to show up for the hearing. Citing information provided by the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK), which has sheltered Rosa after alleged threats to her safety, Kadek said that Rosa was ill and could not turn up for the hearing. KPK spokesman Johan Budi quashed speculation that Rosa decided to skip the session after receiving threats. (Indirect speech)
“The only information that we have is that Rosa is sick,” Johan told reporters. (Direct speech)
Later in the hearing, Ferdian Rico Baskoro, a defense witness for Nazaruddin who served as a human resources manager at one of his companies, PT Anugrah Nusantara, said that it was Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum who controlled the firm. Ferdian also said that there was no such thing as a holding company in the form of Permai Group, which Nazaruddin is believed to have used to make bids for government projects. (Indirect speech)
Three company drivers testified that Anas was the company’s real boss and Nazaruddin was second-in-command.
Unsatisfied by their answers, prosecutors and judges grilled the witnesses. “In 2006, I was paid by the company and since 2009 I was paid by Nazaruddin,” said Aan, one of the defense witness. (Direct speech)
